structures supporting the teeth in the jaw, such as gums and bone. This specialty also addresses the surgical placement of dental implants to replace missing teeth.<\/p>\n<p>The periodontium represents the supporting hard and soft tissues around teeth, such as gums, bone, cement (covers the root surface) and periodontal ligaments (attaches the root to the bone). The discipline of periodontics treats the diseases affecting the periodontium. Gingivitis is the condition present when only the gums are affected by the disease, whereas periodontitis is the condition affecting all periodontal the teeth in the jaw.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vce-text-block\"><div class=\"vce-text-block-wrapper vce\" id=\"el-f519499f\" data-vce-do-apply=\"all el-f519499f\"><p>Dental plaque, which continuously forms itself on the tooth\u2019s surface, is composed of food debris and bacteria. The accumulation of pathogenic bacteria under the gum line contributes to the development of inflammation of the gums and breakdown of the bone around the teeth. This condition can occur when there is an imbalance between the bacteria and the immune response generated by the genetically susceptible individual. Infection of the bone and gums can lead to bone loss and eventual tooth loss. Periodontal disease is the primary cause of adult tooth loss, but with prompt treatment, this outcome can be avoided.<\/p>\n<p>Often, the deterioration of bone and gums around teeth will not cause any symptoms and can go unnoticed. It is therefore very important to be proactive and seek treatment immediately when the disease is just beginning to prevent serious damage to the periodontium.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vce-text-block red d-bold font30  padding30t\" id=\"gingivite\"><div class=\"vce-text-block-wrapper vce\" id=\"el-e8d0dc28\" data-vce-do-apply=\"all el-e8d0dc28\"><h2 class=\"nomargintop\">Gingivitis<\/h2><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vce-text-block red d-regular font30 nomargintop\"><div class=\"vce-text-block-wrapper vce\" id=\"el-5af8ebcf\" data-vce-do-apply=\"all el-5af8ebcf\"><p>Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease. It causes the gums to become red, swollen, and bleed easily.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vce-text-block\"><div class=\"vce-text-block-wrapper vce\" id=\"el-c4a619f1\" data-vce-do-apply=\"all el-c4a619f1\"><p>There is usually little or no discomfort at this early stage.
